Have You Now Finally Broken the Silence at SOS Children's Villages, Ms. Schlack?
In September, Falter published its first investigations into allegations of inappropriate treatment in SOS Children's Villages. The organization knew about inappropriate treatment of children and young people but kept all indications and evidence under lock and key. Managing Director Annemarie Schlack subsequently set up a reform commission to investigate the allegations. (Falter 38/25)
"Silence no longer has a place in this organization. I will continue to take a stand and communicate transparently. At the same time, I know that words alone are never enough; they must be followed by actions. We have announced a complete and independent investigation as well as a comprehensive restructuring and have already taken important steps: opened archives, reopened cases, actively encouraged affected persons to come forward, and significantly expanded our affected person protection team. Every indication of inappropriate treatment is documented, reviewed, and — if necessary — immediately reported to the authorities.
Everything is being brought to light, every case is to be clarified. We have clearly identified systemic failures and leadership failures and drawn consequences from them. The new supervisory board and we as management are pursuing this course together.
At the same time, the reform commission is asking critical questions and developing clear recommendations. Structures and control mechanisms are being comprehensively reviewed and consistently realigned. And through all of this, I know: our teams do important work for children and families every day. Child protection remains the standard by which we are measured."
